ABI mitataan yleensä olkavarren ja nilkan systolisesta painetasosta normaalia verenpainemansettia ja verisuonidopplerlaitetta käyttäen. Tulos < 0,9 viittaa perifeeriseen valtimotautiin ja yleensä myös pitkälle edenneeseen ateroskleroosiin «Laurent S, Boutouyrie P, Asmar R ym.
