- Hyperkolesterolemian ja alaraajojen tukkivan valtimotaudin itsenäisen yhteys on osoitettu useissa tutkimuksissa «Criqui MH, Aboyans V. Epidemiology of peripheral artery disease. Dyslipidemiat ovat näin ollen keskeisiä alaraajojen verisuonitautien riskitekijöitä, jotka tulee hoitaa.
- Kaikilla alaraajojen tukkivaa valtimotautia sairastavilla potilailla tulisi seerumin LDL laskea vähintään 50 %. - Statiinihoito on aiheellinen kaikille tukkivaa valtimotautia sairastaville kolesterolitasosta ja oireista riippumatta, ellei ole vasta-aiheita tai muuta syytä olla aloittamatta lääkitys. - Uudet verenrasvoja alentavat PCSK9-estäjät vähentävät sydän- ja verisuonisairastavuutta ateroskleroosia sairastavilla potilailla, joilla statiini on jo käytössä. Fourier-tutkimuksessa löydös oli merkittävästi korostunut alaryhmässä, jotka sairastivat alaraajojen tukkivaa valtimotautia.
