- Helikobakteerin hoito auttaa toiminnalliseen dyspepsiaan pienellä osalla potilaista (NNT, number needed to treat = noin 15) «Malfertheiner P, Megraud F, O'Morain C ym. - Toiminnallinen dyspepsia on relatiivinen aihe todetun H. pylori -infektion hoitoon.
- Lääkkeiden mahdolliset haittavaikutukset on syytä huomioida.
- Mikäli ensisijainen hoito ei auta, on syytä harkita, onko uusiin hoitoyrityksiin aihetta.
- Oireeton infektio on Suomessa erittäin tavallinen erityisesti yli 50-vuotiailla, joskin infektoituneiden määrä laskee vähitellen «Kosunen TU, Aromaa A, Knekt P ym. Helicobacter antibodies in 1973 and 1994 in the adult population of Vammala, Finland. Epidemiol Infect 1997;119:29-34 »3.
- Oireettoman henkilön hoito ei yleensä ole aiheellista.
- Helikobakteerin hoito vähentää riskiä sairastua ulkustautiin, atrofiseen gastriittiin ja mahasyöpään «Malfertheiner P, Megraud F, O'Morain C ym. - Siten helikobakteerin hoito on ylävatsavaivapotilailla yleensä aiheellista.
- Hoito korjaa pinnallisen gastriitin, jolloin gastriitin eteneminen pysähtyy.

- H. pylorin hoito on yleensä aiheellinen ennen mahdollista polypektomiaa.
- Pitkäaikainen haponestolääkitys PPI:llä voi lisätä mahan korpuksen atrofiaa, jos potilaalla on H. pylori -infektio.

- Tulehduskipulääkkeiden käyttäjillä helikobakteerin häätö vähentänee ulkusriskiä, mutta pitkään tulehduskipulääkehoidossa olevat eivät välttämättä hyödy häätöhoidosta.
- Kaikkien tulehduskipulääkehoitoa tarvitsevien helikobakteeriseulonta ei ole kustannustehokasta.
- PPI-lääkitys on tehokkaampi kuin helikobakteerin häätö tulehduskipulääke-ulkuksen ja ulkusvuodon estossa.
- PPI-hoitoon voidaan tyytyä varsinkin tapauksissa, joissa helikobakteerin häätäminen on vaikeaa (esimerkiksi vanhukset, monisairaat, antibioottien haittavaikutukset).
- Helikobakteeri-infektion seulontaa ja hoitoa suositellaan atrofisen gastriitin kehittymisen välttämiseksi suuren ulkusriskin potilaille ennen pysyvän ASA-hoidon aloitusta «Tulehduskipulääkkeet (online). - Helikobakteeri-infektio on keskeinen tekijä harvinaisen mahan MALT-lymfooman (mucosa associated lymfoid tissue) synnyssä.

- H. pylori -infektion hoidon on todettu auttavan osalla idiopaattista trombosytopenista purppuraa (ITP) sairastavista.
