The Finnish Association of Occupational Health Physicians was founded in 1946, and now has a membership of over 1400. It is governed by its members, who exercise their power through the General Assembly held twice a year. The Autumn General Assembly elects a Council consisting of a chairperson and 14 members representing local branches of the Association.
The aims of the Association are: to promote the occupational health of workers employed in all sectors of the economy; to improve the professional skills and competence of its members; and to promote ethical practices of the profession. The members' work ability and well-being are also important issues. Furthermore, The Association co-operates with all the stakeholders in endeavouring to support the Finnish occupational health care system and to improve the quality of the services. Research on occupational health care is also on the agenda of the Association.
The Association publishes the journal 'Työterveyslääkäri' (Occupational Health Physician) which comes out four times a year. It is targeted at occupational health physicians nationwide. In addition, the Association is active in organizing professional training on topics of current interest for occupational health physicians. The Association also supports the well-being of its members by placing at their disposal a holiday apartment at Vierumäki recreational sports institute.
